Kannur Airport: A Reality by 2011?
As we Kannur patriots and those planning to travel to Kannur in a flight wait for more news on the proposed Airport in this city of Cannanore, about 208 of the 2,000 acres earmarked for the project had already been acquired by the State Government back in 2007! With the recent cabinet approval, it seems that the city of Kannur will be catapulted to the Indian Air Route Map in less than 3-4 years.
Kannur Airport is expected to provide a major boost of the Malabar, North Kerala in terms of business, in terms of tourism revenue and help its thriving textile industry. Kannur is on of the eight best textile centers in India.
An Airport City is also planned in Kannur where plantation tourism will be promoted. KINFRA or Kerala Infrastructure Development Corporation is the agency designated to proceed the work.
The airport coming up at Moorkhanparamba near Mattanur has received the Environment Ministry’s clearance as well as the permission from the Aviation Ministry to operate with a single runway recently, after clearing the techno-economic and feasibility hurdles on the decade-old proposal.

I wish all the success to the Kannur Airport project and let us HOPE it will be a reality by 2011, eventhough I do not see much interest/progress/momentum from the present Kerala government.

The Hindu Business Line : Kannur airport to be developed on BOO model31 May 2008 … Update at 1430 hrs (IST) … THIRUVANANTHAPUARAM: The proposed Kannur airport in north Kerala would be developed on Build, Operate and Own (BOO) model with the state government holding 26 per cent stake in the venture.
The proposal in this regard was approved by the State Cabinet on Saturday, said the Chief Minister Mr V S Achuthanandan.
The partner for building the greenfield airport would be selected through transparent bidding, he said. The Cabinet also gave its nod for setting up IT parks in Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasargode districts.
The land required for locating the parks would identify and handed over to state-run Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL) by Revenue Department.
Each park would have 25 to 100 acres of land, he said. The government had earlier announced its plan to develop IT parks in all districts as part of the strategy to make Kerala a major IT destination based on the hub-and-spoke model.
An Aqua Economic Park would be developed at Katungallur in Ernakulam district for breeding and marketing of a wide variety of decocrative fish, he said. - PTI

Prospects bleak for Karipur
By Our Staff Reporter
KASARAGOD, OCT. 25. The Rs.80-crore development project of the Bajpe airport in Mangalore is likely to have an adverse impact on the prospects of the Karipur airport in Kozhikode.
With a 8,000-odd ft second runway in place, bigger planes, including airbuses, will be able to operate from Mangalore. The expansion project also envisages the setting up of two more hangars, a darkroom, a cargo terminal and an airport hijacking control room. International flights are likely to be operated from there once the work is completed in a year.
Mangalore SEZ
The cargo terminal is being established in anticipation of an increase in cargo traffic following the Karnataka Government’s plan to have a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Mangalore. The SEZ will involve an investment of over Rs.23,000 crores.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has acquired more land and placed a request for more land with the Karnataka Government to enable the construction of a new and larger terminal.
With the opening of the new international terminal, the distance between Mangalore city and the airport will be reduced by a few kilometres.
Gulf expatriates
The expansion of the Bajpe airport is no good news for the Karipur airport as a large number of people from this part of the State may choose the Bajpe airport for their journey to the Gulf.
It is said that at least one person, if not more, in each family in Kasaragod district works in the Gulf. It is estimated that there are about four lakh people from the district working in the Gulf countries.
Against a distance (by road) of 220 km from Kasaragod town to Karipur, the distance between Kasaragod town and the Bajpe airport will be about 70 km only.
Kannur airport
While the development of the Bajpe airport will have a definite impact on the passenger traffic at Karipur, it will invariably put a question mark over the proposed airport in Kannur. It will be a matter of serious deliberation as to whom the Kannur airport will cater to, given the fact that there will be two major airports on the south and north of Kannur town, situated at a distance of 120 km and 150 km respectively.
There has been a growing demand from the political parties and people in Kannur district to have an airport in the district ever since the upgradation of the Karipur airport some years ago.
Like Kasaragod, a large number of people from Kannur work in the Gulf countries.

Kannur airport proposal by itself does not indicate
a mentally sound one.
Calicut and Mangalore together does not have more than 1.5 million passengers. They are both loss making - where is Kannur getting its passengers from and how can it ever make a single pie profit ?
Obviously the feasibility study is totally
doctored according to the needs of some land mafia.
Till date except for one Leela group chairman, no business group is enthusiastic about this.
Well I won’t be suprised if this land acquisition end up as a big scandal when all the land goes into the hands of some mafioso linked to Kodiyeri-Pinarayi and other leaders of other political parties.
Isn’t there any studied person in Kannur to tell this to Kannur’s hapless people whose land is
being taken away ?

This is an absurd and ridiculous idea of a dumb, useless govt. Even in most advanced countries you cannot operate 3 airports with 250 km distance. How these bastard politicians fool people and waste taxpayer money is unbelievable. They should spend the money planned on kannur airport, on making a good highway from kannur to the Calicut airport, why not use the money in making the NH 17 a 8 lane expressway, so that ppl can reach Mangalore or calicut faster.
why dont the morons who support all these plans, ask to make an airport in every village. The shame is that keralites are bhikhari people, they go and beg for jobs in gulf and elsewhere in india but never allow any business to operate in kerala. How long will this labor jobs in gulf will continue? very soon, there will be new technologies for running vehicles, and when oil dries up, all these airports will become junkyards. Rather than wasting money on useless airports and wasteful things, the bastard politicians of kerala, should try to improve the everyday life of people, what is the condition of roads in Kochi, and everywhere else in kerala, what about garbage in kochi, the city becomes a slum in rainy season…? it is a shame, even in Bihar, UP, MP backward states, center has made better roads than kerala, because kerala’s politicians are hijras, dhoti-wearing morons, nobody in Delhi gives them any respect, just go to even small towns in other states, they have better infrastructure than the biggest cities of kerala like cochin, calicut, T’puram… kerala will remain like this for ever- a circus full of clowns.

@ Jai Menon,
I think Kannur will benefit a lot from the airport since there is a blooming textile industry in Kannur..however, you are right about the development in kerala which is pretty much slow as a snail. See this video.

Mattanur airport will give kerala a good boost to tourism industry and also there are a large number of people in the area living in various gulf countries who can be benefitted to a larger extent. the whole region will be developed very fast and also the industries especially handloom industry will help to earn more foreign exchange. People want to save time and reach their destination as fast as possible and more the demand, more the flights and more the profit. Definitely, Cannanore airport will get all the money invested for constructing will get them back in five years time. So, dod not dealy any further.
Best wishes

I am anxiously waiting for the Airport to become a reality. It will be a good boost to the economy of North malabar. The rate of return on the investment made on this airport will be definitely the highest anyone can get.

Kannur airport makes no sense. A stupid idea. In such a small state three aiports, makes no sense. What the authority should do? Develop the Calicut airport more and link the aiport with good roads with other parts of Calicut, Kannur, Wynad and Kasargod districts.

I am from Kannur. I always feel difficulties to travel upto Kozhikokde Airport due to very poor road. I have seen from my childhood on the fast track road plan but I have no hope to see in reality in the near future. Thanks to British Rule. It was thier kindness that we are enjoying with the existing tiny road. Indians are very poor in thinking for themsevelves. But they really use their brain for the West or for other loards. Let us have at least an Airport so that we do not need to waste our time on the road while coming for 3 to 4 days leave to kerala, for an gulf employee like me. We all know that our common peaple are fools. They believe all drama of the polititions and go behind them without using their common sense. They will cut the trees, burn animals live if thier leader orders. Leader has the licence to change their words every moment and join with any tom, dick and harry to get personal benefit. Let us wish to have go back to monarchy or foreigh rule to realize once agin the importance of freedom and the greatness of Democracy
